In a letter to the EU Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean, Minister of Transport Tālis Linkaits, together with the Ministers of Transport of the other two Baltic States and Poland, urge not to delay further sanctions against Russia, banning its vessels from entering EU ports.
Ministers note in a letter that EU has been able to take decisive and unprecedented actions over these last few weeks. We have responded with a far-reaching package of measures spanning even in the transport field. “Only effective measures can bring tangible results and pressure Russia to stop the war. This will only happen when Russia's actions meet with a solidary, unanimous and strong response from the EU by adopting further targeted sanctions,” the Ministers stated in the letter.
“Russia has been continuing its unjustifiable brutal invasion of Ukraine, its people, infrastructure, democracy, and freedom for a month now. In such a situation, further entry of Russian ships into the ports of the European Union is inadmissible,” says Minister of Transport Tālis Linkaits.
The Ministers of Transport from the Baltic States and Poland also call for a temporary total ban on land freight transport from Russia and Belarus to the European Union, noting that they still “Russia’s machine of war” on a daily basis.
Latvian Minister of Transport Tālis Linkaits, Polish Minister of Infrastructure Andrzej Adamczyk, Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skodis and Estonian Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Taavi Aas signed the letter.
