On Thursday, 17 March 2022, Minister of Transport Tālis Linkaits and Ministers of Transport of Poland, Lithuania, and Estonia discussed the joint further action of the transport sector in response to the Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

Following weeklong consultations on various platforms, the Ministers discussed the impact of the Russia’s war on the transport sector, including the impact of sanctions already adopted and potential new restrictions.

One of the topics of discussion was potential joint action by the regional level and the European Union on international freight transport. The Ministers have also discussed future action in navigation given that this is one of the areas that could be included in future sanction packages at the EU level.

The Ministers agreed that future action on further targeted sanctions in the transport sector, including international freight transport, should be discussed at the European Council, as well as a joint ministerial letter to EU Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean should be drafted.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Transport of Latvia Tālis Linkaits, Minister of Infrastructure of Poland Andrzej Adamczyk, Minister of Transport and Communications of Lithuania Marius Skuodis, and Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure of Estonia Taavi Aas.
