Installation of facade and roof glazing has begun at the new Riga Central Station

In the southern part of the new Riga Central Station building, installation of facade and roof glazing has begun. Final glass installation works in passenger canopy structures above the platforms have also started. It is planned that the glazing works will take approximately 3 - 4 months, depending on weather conditions. As a result, the station building will increasingly take on its intended architectural form, previously seen only in visualizations. The total glazing area of the new station building is 1,500 m².

“This is an important construction stage in the southern part of the Rail Baltica Riga Central Station building, which will significantly transform the station’s visual identity and mark its transition into a modern, European-level transport hub. Full railway system construction will continue in the coming years. It is planned that train traffic will be able to fully use the southern part of the station from summer 2028, while the connection with the Rail Baltica station at the airport is planned for the end of 2029,” said Jānis Naglis, Board Member of SIA “Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas,” the national implementer of Rail Baltica in Latvia.

Construction work in the southern part of the new Riga Central Station is currently being carried out in accordance with the contract signed by SIA “Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas” (EDzL), the national Rail Baltica implementer in Latvia, with the Central Finance and Contracting Agency (CFLA) for project No. 1.1.1.1.i.2/2/25/I/CFLA/001 “Improving passenger infrastructure by building the southern part of Riga Central Railway Station.” The total cost of this financing agreement is planned at EUR 138,699,855.80, including EUR 114,627,980.00 from the Recovery Fund and EUR 24,071,875.80 from the state budget. The contract was signed in November 2025 and provides that major works during project implementation - namely roof installation, facade construction, platform canopy construction, finishing works, passenger access infrastructure construction, as well as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing works - are to be completed by August 31, 2026, upon which a certificate of completion of major works will be issued.

Construction work at the site is being carried out by the construction consortium BERERIX.

“Construction is currently progressing according to plan so that the southern part of the station building, including platforms, building information systems, and necessary infrastructure, can be handed over to the client in the second half of this year. One of the conditions for using the European Recovery Fund financing was a very short construction period. This required a high level of workforce mobilization to coordinate global manufacturers’ and suppliers’  schedules with construction works in Latvia and our winter conditions. I believe BERERIX is performing this task honorably, and the project will be delivered on time and according to requirements,” emphasizes Guntis Āboltiņš-Āboliņš, CEO of the BERERIX consortium.

At the beginning of 2026, BERERIX successfully completed the installation of the main metal load-bearing structures of the new Riga Central Station roof and continued with roof insulation layers and installation of architectural metal panels. Passenger canopy load-bearing structures have also been completed, forming a continuous line along the entire platform area - from the new station building to the elevator entrances—covering three newly built platforms.

FIDIC Engineer, construction supervision, and expert functions at the site are carried out by SIA “FORMA 2.”

The contract provides for the involvement of state joint-stock company “Latvijas dzelzceļš” (LDz) as a partner in project implementation. LDz, as a potential infrastructure manager, is actively participating in resolving handover and management issues for the Riga Central Station building, ensuring timely provision of information and technical readiness required for operational functions.

The southern part of the Riga Central Station building will be able to fully function as a passenger station after the completion of 1520 mm gauge railway infrastructure works. Final commissioning in full scope is linked to the completion of the 1520 mm railway infrastructure in the southern part, currently planned for mid-2028.

The BERERIX consortium brings together Belgian construction giant BESIX Group, national builder RERE Būve, and Italian construction company Rizzani de Eccher, with the aim of implementing a significant part of the Rail Baltica project—design and reconstruction of the Riga Central Railway Station complex, construction of new European-gauge tracks and a railway bridge over the Daugava River, as well as embankment and surrounding infrastructure.
